Is there still a need for loyalty cards?

07 November 2011

Waitrose has just unveiled its first loyalty card to reward customers and gain an understanding of consumer habits. The card will help them compete with schemes such as Tesco and Nectar.

This leads to the question how loyal are consumers? With saturated markets and the rapid increase in price comparison sites, do consumers purchase based on loyalty or price? Every marketer still dreams of consumer loyalty however it is becoming more difficult.

In a new era why not use social media or mobile to connect with your consumers? Statistics show people spend 700 billion minutes per month of Facebook. Enhancing your customer interaction can increase consumer loyalty. Some marketers believe that loyalty card schemes are expensive and intrusive.

More and more consumers are now using email marketing to promote offers to customers. Consumers are emailed discount codes and offers from various businesses. Some researchers believe that email marketing encourages consumers to purchase based on offers and price as opposed to purchasing based on loyalty.
